Presentation TitleBuilding Psychological Safety: The Link to Unlocking Team Potential

Abstract: Psychological safety on project teams is nothing new. Project Managers have always been responsible for setting the normative behaviours on projects. That said, why do many Project Managers fall short on building a psychologically safe environment for their team?  A team with a psychologically safe environment will deliver more value to their organizations faster.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand that as a PM you are a leader responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe environment
  • Consider your development as a leader and what you need to do to lead more effectively
  • Conceptualize the complexity of communications with your team and how you can improve the message your sending and what intentions you’re signaling
  • Gather skills you can practice back in the office immediately to improve your leadership
  • Know how to deal with situations where someone may or may not have legitimate claims that their psychological safety is at risk

Speaker’s Bio: Kursten Faller

Kursten is one of those rare people who excels at the technical and human sides of organizations. He’s probably the only person who can talk intelligently about the inner workings of a heat pump with an engineer or about the nuances of neuroscience based leadership with a CEO, and back it up! This has allowed him to help some of the most rigid technical organizations achieve successful organizational outcomes through high performance teams. He's attracted major corporate and government clients in healthcare, industrial, retail, mining, oil & gas, construction, and engineering.
Kursten has a degree in engineering, master’s certificate in project management and a long list of accreditations in social psychology, neuroscience based coaching, project management and engineering. He's a past lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan Faculty of Engineering where he taught project management for engineers. He's served on the board of the Project Management Institute Regina South SK Chapter and is a long-time supporter of Big Brothers and big sisters.
Kursten is known for booking one-way tickets to places far from home, experiencing the culture and booking the next ticket to wherever he wants to explore next. His work and personal travels have taken him to over 20 countries. One time he was asked to travel to Africa with someone he had only met a few times and ended up being best man in that person's wedding.
